Mentor in the Middle Blog
TL; DR;
Most of what you do won’t move the needle. A small portion of your effort creates most of your results. The problem is — beginners don’t know which part that is yet, so they spread their energy everywhere.
Most people think results come from doing more.
More effort.
More time.
More work.
But the truth is… effort alone doesn’t create results.
In this post, we’ll break down why most of what you do doesn’t actually matter — and why a small fraction of your effort ends up driving almost everything.
You're busy. You're consistent. But the results don't match the effort — and that gap is getting harder to ignore.
I used to think if I just did more… I’d get better results.
More posts.
More learning.
More tweaking.
More time.
And for a while, that feels right.
You’re busy.
You’re engaged.
You’re “working on it.”
Until you realize:
You’re doing a lot… and nothing is actually changing.
If you’ve been at this for any length of time, you’ve probably seen it:
One post gets traction, 20 don’t
One idea clicks, 10 fall flat.
One small change moves things, everything else feels like noise.
It doesn’t feel fair.
It doesn’t feel predictable.
And it definitely doesn’t feel linear.
✅ KEY CONCEPT: Results Are Not Evenly Distributed
In most things that involve thinking or creating, a small portion of effort produces most of the outcome.
There’s actually a pattern behind this.
Something called Price’s Law.
Just to clarify, you may have heard of the 80/20 rule and think I’m just talking about Pareto’s Principle — which is fine for smaller groups or simple distributions.
But for larger populations, Price’s Law applies. It’s harsher, it’s not linear, and it means that an even smaller fraction of people or actions ends up leading the pack.
That same pattern shows up everywhere.
100 pieces of content → ~10 matter.
100 hours worked → a small fraction actually moves things forward.
I once heard a story through the corporate grapevine that perfectly illustrates this.
An executive team was reviewing productivity on the floor and realized a small portion of the workforce was responsible for the majority of the output.
One executive reacted:
“What? Only a small percentage of the team is getting the results? Get rid of the rest immediately!”
Another pushed back:
“You can’t touch them. Without that larger group, the smaller group doesn’t function.”
It sounds almost absurd…
But it highlights something important.
Uneven contribution isn’t a flaw in the system.
It’s how the system works. Or as that guy put it — "Don't fuck with my 80%."
✅ KEY CONCEPT: A Small Fraction Drives a Large Outcome
The challenge isn’t effort — it’s identifying which effort actually matters.
This pattern doesn’t just show up in effort.
It shows up in income too.
Think about something simple.
Ice cream.
There might be 31 flavors on the board…
But most people order the same two.
Vanilla.
Chocolate.
Everything else?
It’s there.
It looks good.
It gives the illusion of choice.
But it’s not what drives the business.
The same thing happens in almost every field.
A very small percentage of people generate a disproportionate amount of the results…
And the income follows that pattern.
A small percentage of creators get most of the views.
A small percentage of affiliates make most of the commissions
A small percentage of businesses generate most of the revenue
✅ KEY CONCEPT: Income Follows Uneven Contribution
The people producing the highest-impact results capture the largest share of the outcome.
This is why income doesn’t distribute evenly… and why, at the extreme end, you see billionaires.
The system doesn’t pay for effort — it pays for impact.
And as the system grows…
It gets more extreme.
Not less.
That’s the part that can feel discouraging.
Because when you’re starting out, it can feel like:
“Am I just competing for scraps?”
But that’s not what’s happening.
✅ KEY CONCEPT: You’re Not Competing With Everyone — You’re Competing for Relevance
The goal isn’t to outwork the majority.
It’s to become part of the small group that actually moves the needle.
Here’s the problem.
When you’re new, you don’t know:
what works.
what doesn’t.
what actually matters.
So you treat everything like it matters equally.
You try everything.
You spread your effort everywhere.
And that’s where time slips away without anything to show for it.
There’s something else going on here that took me a while to see.
A lot of us were trained to look productive… long before we ever tried to build anything on our own.
At one point in my corporate job, we were told not to walk around the building or go out to the shop floor without carrying a clipboard, a pen, and paper.
It was basically a hall pass.
If management saw you, you looked like you were doing something important.
We started calling it:
“The look busy kit.”
It didn’t matter what was on the paper.
What mattered was looking like something was happening.
And the funny thing is… it worked.
Fast forward to trying to build something on your own.
You sit down to work on your business.
And what happens?
You start:
organizing notes.
tweaking things that already work.
researching one more angle.
rewriting something that didn’t need rewriting.
It feels productive.
But nothing actually moves.
✅ KEY CONCEPT: Activity Can Masquerade as Progress
Just because you’re doing something doesn’t mean it’s moving you forward.
Inside our mentoring group, Ayda shared something that hit home.
She said instead of working on her business…
She had been cleaning the deep, dark corners of her basement.
Not the obvious stuff.
The stuff nobody sees.
The stuff that doesn’t really matter.
The room went stone quiet like we'd all been gut punched.
And it’s easy to laugh at that…
Until you realize how familiar it feels.
Because it’s the same pattern.
When something feels uncertain, unclear, or uncomfortable…
We shift to something that feels:
controllable.
visible.
“productive”.
Even if it doesn’t actually move anything forward.
✅ KEY CONCEPT: When Progress Is Unclear, We Default to What Feels Productive
Avoidance doesn’t look like doing nothing — it often looks like doing the wrong things really well.
I wasn’t avoiding work… I was just really good at doing things that didn’t matter.
Where This Connects to the Value Equation
This is where everything ties together.
When effort doesn’t produce results, something shifts:
The equation starts to break.
Everything starts to feel harder — even if you’re working more.
The answer isn’t:
More effort.
More content.
More learning.
It’s something else.
It’s:
Feedback
Direction
Correction
The ability to recognize:
“This matters… this doesn’t.”
✅ KEY CONCEPT: Progress Comes From Identifying High-Leverage Actions
Not all work is equal — some actions change everything.
This is where things are changing fast.
AI can compress the time it takes to figure out what works.
Faster feedback.
Faster iteration.
Faster pattern recognition.
What used to take hundreds of hours…
Can now happen much faster.
✅ KEY CONCEPT: AI Accelerates Pattern Recognition
It doesn’t replace effort — it helps you focus effort where it actually matters.
And I'm using it to manage my checklist for this blog... not the writing, just the structure and formatting - AI is good at that, I'm not.
You don’t need to do everything.
You need to find the few things that actually move the needle.
And then do more of those.
✅ KEY CONCEPT: Leverage Comes From Focus, Not Volume
Success comes from doing more of what works — not more of everything.
I thought I needed to do more.
Turns out…
I needed to figure out what actually mattered.
If this resonated, it’s not just about the equation.
It’s also about where you are in the process… and how that shapes what you see.
“Stop counting effort. Start counting impact.”
This can feel like a heavy realization… whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro. But rest assured, as a storyteller - I won't leave you without hope, the answer lies here...
I wrote about that here — how people move through different levels of awareness and why the same opportunity can feel obvious to one person and invisible to another.
And if you’ve ever felt that drop in motivation halfway through something that once felt exciting… there’s a pattern to that too.
